NICOLE PEASNELL, NATUROPATH FOR THYROID HEALTH IN BRISBANE & ONLINE
There's more to your Thyroid health than just your TSH result
You've been told your results are fine - yet something still doesn't feel right. I work with women to look beyond standard testing and uncover the real reasons behind their thyroid symptoms. Because there is so much more we can do to support your thyroid health naturally.
Your symptoms are real.
Even when your tests say otherwise.
The exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix.
The kilos that won't shift no matter how hard you try.
Hair coming out in the shower, brain fog that makes it hard to concentrate, mood swings that feel out of character, irregular cycles, or a fertility journey that isn't going the way you hoped. If any of this sounds familiar, you are not alone, and you are not imagining it. Whether you're living with a formal diagnosis of hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or you've been told your TSH is 'fine', these symptoms deserve a thorough investigation. In my clinical practice that often includes looking at Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3 and thyroid antibodies, not just TSH alone.
The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, but its influence reaches almost every system in your body - your metabolism, your mood, your digestion, your hormones, your energy, and your reproductive health. When it isn't functioning at its best, the effects can be felt everywhere. And yet so many women are told their results are normal and sent home without answers.
Here's the thing though. Standard thyroid testing is a valuable starting point, but it doesn't always capture the full picture. A normal TSH result is reassuring, yet deeper hormonal imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, and autoimmune activity can sometimes go undetected without more comprehensive investigation. Without a thorough picture, the root cause of your symptoms can remain hidden for years.
I know this experience firsthand. As someone who has navigated my own Hashimoto's diagnosis, I understand the frustration of feeling under-par when everything looks fine on paper.
It's what drives me to look deeper for the women I work with. Combining my personal understanding with my clinical training as a naturopath to help you find the answers you've been searching for.
This is for you if...

My approach to Thyroid health
Naturopathy is an evidence-informed approach to healthcare that combines the therapeutic benefits of nutrition, herbal medicine, and lifestyle medicine to support your body's own innate ability to heal. It draws on both traditional principles and modern scientific research to address the whole person, not just the numbers on a test result, or individual symptoms.
As a degree-qualified naturopath, I believe that true, lasting change comes from understanding your own health and having the knowledge to advocate for yourself. My role is to work alongside you and your medical team, not to replace them, but to fill in the gaps and help you feel genuinely well.
1. Looking at the Whole Picture
Thyroid health is rarely just about the thyroid. When I work with you, I take an in-depth view of all the systems and factors that influence how your thyroid may function and how you feel from day to day. This can include:

Nicole Peasnell, B.Nat
Bachelor of Naturopathy
Member ATMS
Nutrition & Diet
Identifying triggers, intolerances, nutrient deficiencies and influences commonly associated with thyroid dysfunction
Nervous system & Adrenal health
Reducing the impact of chronic stress which can playing a role in thyroid and overall health
Digestive & Microbiome health
Optimising areas of gut health playing a significant role in thyroid and immune regulation
Hormonal health
Exploring how your thyroid interacts with your broader hormonal environment and symptom profile
Immune health
Particularly relevant for autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto's and Graves' disease
Environment & Lifestyle influences
Identifying environmental toxin load, sleep quality and lifestyle factors important to thyroid health
2. Comprehensive and Functional Testing
Most thyroid care starts in the middle. A TSH result. A prescription. A "come back in three months." At Seed & Flourish, I start at the beginning, because you can't address what hasn't been properly investigated.
Standard testing is a starting point, not the full picture. Within the Thyroid Decoded programme, comprehensive thyroid pathology testing is included from day one, and where clinically relevant, we can go further. Functional testing to build a deeper picture may include nutrient status, inflammatory markers, microbiome health, heavy metal status, environmental toxicity, and more. All discussed and arranged based on your individual case.
3. What I Use to Support Your Thyroid Health
My toolkit draws on the best of naturopathic medicine, tailored to your individual needs:

Dietary Modification

Herbal Medicine

Lifestyle Modification

Nutritional therapy
4. What the Research Says
The evidence supporting a naturopathic approach to thyroid health is growing.
Research published in 2024 found that:
"dietary interventions can significantly influence thyroid autoimmunity, with specific nutritional strategies showing measurable benefits for people with Hashimoto's thyroiditis"
A separate study found that:
"nutritional approaches, including targeted supplementation, can play a meaningful role in supporting thyroid function and reducing antibody levels in autoimmune thyroid conditions."
This is the kind of evidence that informs my ongoing approach, combining what the research tells us with what your individual body and situation needs.
Understanding common Thyroid conditions
Why the Thyroid is important
The thyroid is a small gland with an outsized role in your health. When it isn't functioning optimally, the effects ripple across almost every system in your body.
Thyroid dysfunction can stem from many factors including genetics, nutritional deficiencies, immune imbalance, chronic stress, inflammation, and environmental influences. Which is exactly why a whole-body approach matters.
The four common Thyroid presentations
Hypothyroidism
Underactive thyroid - too little hormone produced
Common symptoms
Fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, hair loss, constipation, cold intolerance, low mood, heavy periods
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
Autoimmune condition - may drive an underactive thyroid
Common symptoms
Same as hypothyroidism, often with fluctuating symptoms and elevated antibodies
Hyperthyroidism
Overactive thyroid - too much hormone produced
Common symptoms
Weight loss, rapid heart rate, anxiety, heat intolerance, sweating, insomnia, increased bowel movements
Graves' Disease
Autoimmune condition - may drive an overactive thyroid
Common symptoms
Same as hyperthyroidism, often with eye-related symptoms
Your symptoms are unique to you
No two people experience thyroid dysfunction the same way. You may recognise several symptoms from the list above, or just one or two that have been quietly affecting your quality of life.
Some people experience symptoms for years before receiving a diagnosis, and others have a diagnosis but still don't feel well despite treatment.
Wherever you are in your thyroid journey, naturopathic support can help address the underlying drivers, not just manage the symptoms.

"TSH is just one piece of the thyroid puzzle. TSH itself is an important marker but it doesn’t tell us if your thyroid is actually making enough thyroid hormone, or if your body is activating it properly."

Frequently Asked Questions - Naturopathic Thyroid support
Can a Naturopath help with thyroid?
Yes. As a thyroid naturopath with 22 years of clinical experience, I work with people managing hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's, and Graves' disease. Naturopathic care looks beyond the thyroid gland itself to address the many interconnected factors that influence how well your thyroid functions. This can include gut health, nutrition, stress, sleep, immune function, and environmental exposures. Whether you are newly diagnosed or have been managing a thyroid condition for years, naturopathic support can be a valuable part of your overall care.
Can I improve my thyroid function naturally?
Natural thyroid support through targeted nutrition, herbal medicine, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications can play a meaningful role in how you feel. Thyroid function is influenced by nutrient levels, gut health, chronic stress, sleep quality, and environmental exposures, and by identifying what is contributing to your symptoms we can support your body's thyroid function naturally, even if you are on thyroid medication.
Can you offer thyroid testing?
Yes. I can arrange comprehensive thyroid blood testing for clients across Australia and New Zealand, including full thyroid panels that often go beyond standard testing. We can also offer testing for important nutrients essential for thyroid function. All testing is arranged through accredited pathology laboratories, and results are reviewed with you in detail during your consultation.
What does a comprehensive Thyroid panel include?
Our comprehensive Thyroid panel includes TSH (Thyroid Stimulating hormone), FT4 (Free T4), FT3 (Free T3), RT3 (Reverse T3), Thyroid antibodies (TPO Ab, TgAb), Thyroid receptor antibodies (TSI, TRAb). This allows us to understand the full picture of your thyroid function, including how well the thyroid gland is functioning, how effectively your body is converting thyroid hormones, and whether autoimmunity may be playing a role. This gives us far more to work with than a standard TSH test alone.
Can I work with you if I take thyroid medication?
Absolutely. Many of my clients are already taking thyroid medication such as levothyroxine and still experience symptoms their prescription alone does not fully resolve. I focus on the areas beyond your prescription, such as nutritional status, gut health, stress, sleep, immune function, and environmental factors.
How much does a Thyroid Naturopath Consultation cost?
Initial Consultations are $259 and Follow-up appointments range from $159-$199 depending on appointment length required. I offer a free discovery call so you can share what is going on, understand what working together looks like, and ask any questions before committing. If you require pathology and functional testing - fees are additional and will be discussed based on your individual needs.
Can you collaborate with my Endocrinologist?
Yes and in most cases, I find this to be the ideal approach. With your consent, I am happy to communicate with your endocrinologist or GP to ensure the support I provide complements your medical care. My role is to support the broader factors influencing your thyroid health like nutrition, gut function, stress, sleep, and environmental load. Over 22 years of clinical practice, I have found this integrative model delivers helpful outcomes for clients.
My thyroid results are in the normal range, is there any more I can do to help my symptoms?
Yes. Being told your results are "normal" when you are clearly not feeling great is one of the most common frustrations I hear. Standard testing often looks at TSH alone, which may important detail. I use a broad range of thyroid markers, functional reference ranges, and assess nutrient co-factors, gut health, adrenal function, thyroid antibodies, and environmental exposures as there if often more to explore when it comes to thyroid health.
Can you offer functional testing for thyroid health?
Yes. For clients across Australia and New Zealand, I offer functional and pathology testing beyond standard thyroid blood panels. This can include heavy metal testing, environmental pollutant panels, gut and microbiome testing, adrenal and stress hormone assessment, and full nutrient panels. Testing is recommended based on your individual presentation, and results are reviewed with you in consultation.
